The Live Music Scene in Kennesaw

Kennesaw lives at an interesting intersection: a city with genuine Civil War history and a walkable downtown, but also home to Kennesaw State University — which brings a younger, more music-hungry audience than most Cobb County cities its size. The combination has built a live music scene that punches above its weight, spread across two distinct clusters worth knowing about.

Downtown Kennesaw anchors the warm-weather identity of the scene. The United Bankshares Amphitheater at Depot Park hosts the city’s Kennesaw Concert Series from spring into fall — free outdoor shows on a proper stage that have become a genuine community institution. The free First Friday Concert Series at Main Street Plaza runs May through October, bringing live performances to the heart of downtown on the first Friday of each month. Between these two series, Kennesaw offers some of the most consistent free outdoor live music in Cobb County.

When the weather cools and the outdoor series take a break, the indoor circuit takes over. SuBourbon Baranchors the downtown evening scene — a well-executed bourbon bar with a regular calendar of blues, jazz, and acoustic sets. It’s the kind of spot that feels thought-through: good drinks, a crowd that actually wants to be there, and performers who know how to work an intimate room.

A few minutes east on Busbee Parkway, two venues offer a different take on the Kennesaw music experience. HighNote at Hamp & Harry’s is one of the better live music dining experiences in Cobb County — an upscale restaurant and bar with a dedicated stage hosting regional acts across rock, blues, and acoustic formats several nights a week. The quality of the room makes it feel more Buckhead than suburban Cobb. Right nearby, Horned Owl Brewing brings the casual end of the spectrum: craft beer, weekend bands, and a patio that makes evenings feel easy. These two venues practically form their own mini-circuit.

What’s emerging in Kennesaw is a scene that reflects the city’s dual personality — civic investment in outdoor concerts on one side, and a bar-and-restaurant ecosystem developing its own identity on the other. For a city that still gets overlooked compared to Marietta a few exits south on I-75, Kennesaw deserves to be on the regular rotation. Take exit 271 for downtown and the Depot Park amphitheater, or exit 271 toward Busbee Parkway for HighNote and Horned Owl. Parking is easy throughout on most nights.
