Little Big Town’s Fox Theatre Show Is a Georgia Homecoming for Half the Band
Two of Little Big Town’s four members have Georgia roots, making Saturday’s Fox Theatre performance more than another tour stop.
When Little Big Town takes the stage at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre Saturday night, the performance will carry a little more local meaning than the average tour stop.
Two of the group’s four members have strong Georgia roots. Kimberly Schlapman grew up in Cornelia, while Karen Fairchild spent part of her childhood in Marietta.
Now the two singers are returning to one of Georgia’s most recognizable stages with the group they helped build more than 25 years ago.
Two Georgia Paths
Schlapman’s musical beginnings can be traced to Cornelia in North Georgia.
She grew up singing and playing piano alongside her mother at a Baptist church. Music was part of her life long before country radio, Grammy Awards and sold-out theaters entered the picture.
Fairchild was born in Indiana to Southern parents and lived in the Chicago area before her family moved to Marietta. Her path eventually took her to Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where she met Schlapman through the university’s choir program.
The two later reconnected in Nashville during the late 1990s. They eventually joined with Phillip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook to form Little Big Town.
Four Singers, One Sound
Little Big Town developed an unusual identity for a country group.
Instead of building the band around one permanent lead singer, all four members share lead-vocal responsibilities. Their four-part harmonies became the group’s defining sound.
That approach helped produce songs including “Boondocks,” “Pontoon,” “Girl Crush,” “Better Man” and “Little White Church.”
The lineup has also remained intact through changing record labels, industry shifts and more than two decades of touring and recording.
Fairchild recently reflected on the group’s 26-year relationship and the respect that allows four distinct personalities and voices to continue creating music together.
A New Chapter
The Fox Theatre concert is part of Little Big Town’s For the Art of It Tour, supporting the group’s 12th studio album, It’s a Dying Art.
Released August 28, the album includes collaborations with Ashley Monroe, Jason Isbell and Kelsea Ballerini.
The title reflects the group’s interest in music that still feels human and lived-in. After more than 25 years together, the members continue to emphasize musicianship, emotion and the imperfections that can give a performance its character.
Singer-songwriter Meg McRee will open Saturday’s concert.
A Georgia Homecoming
The Fox Theatre has hosted generations of performers, but this show brings together several pieces of Georgia music history in one place.
One singer’s story began in a North Georgia church. Another spent part of her childhood in Marietta. Their paths crossed in a college choir before leading them to Nashville and, eventually, stages around the world.
Saturday night, those paths converge again in Atlanta.
